What is MyKey?

MyKey is the placeholder name for a powerful new capability that gives individuals new superpowers on The Internet.

We say placeholder because the implications of these new capabilities are very significant, and therefore need full and proper debate amongst consumer-representing bodies prior to a final naming and launch.

In technical terms, MyKey is the consumer facing name for what under the hood is known as FedID and Federated ID Connect. The parallel here is that we currently have consumer facing names and services under the banner ‘social login’, which then lead to ‘sign up with Google, Sign up with Facebook’ etc, these login services are all built on the more technically named Open ID and Open ID Connect.

MyKey has all of the same sign up/ sign in capabilities as the other social login services; but has safeguards that protect the user from surveillance, and methods to ensure portability and interoperability of MyKey across many providers.

The MyKey site is designed to host a discussion around the end-user story. It does not claim to know all the answers; but will enable empowering solutions for individuals to emerge through discussion and testing, to power a better Internet.
